Communications and Public Awareness

One of the four functions of Combat Poverty set out in the Combat Poverty Agency Act 1986 is "the promoting of greater public understanding of the nature, causes and extent of poverty in the State and the measures necessary to overcome such poverty".

The Combat Poverty Agency is committed to promoting greater awareness and understanding of poverty and social exclusion in Ireland through the provision of relevant, accurate and up-to-date information on poverty, its causes and consequences and on measures necessary to eliminate it.

Our information and public awareness work includes:

  • Commissioning, publishing and disseminating research, policy submissions, discussion papers and information resources on poverty in Ireland
  • Working with national and local media to promote greater awareness of poverty
  • An annual national conference and a number of regional and policy seminars each year to promote debate and policy interest in poverty
  • Our quarterly journal, Action on Poverty Today, which provides analysis and discussion of all aspects of poverty and social inclusion in Ireland
  • A library and information service on poverty and social exclusion
  • Developing public education programmes to raise awareness of poverty in Ireland

For more information on our information and public awareness services, see our Poverty in Ireland, Publications, Library and Links pages.
