Peace Programme

Logo for EU Programme for Peace and ReconciliationCombat Poverty is responsible, with Pobal (formerly Area Development Management), for implementing a substantial part of the EU Peace Programme in the Border region. It is also one of the intermediary funding bodies responsible for implementing two cross-border measures in partnership with the Community Foundation of Northern Ireland and Co-operation Ireland. The Peace Programme promotes peace-building and reconciliation amongst those most affected by the political conflict on the island of Ireland. It seeks to deal with the legacy of the conflict, to take opportunities arising from peace and to pave the way to reconciliation.

Border Action

Pobal is an intermediary company established by the Irish Government in agreement with the European Commission to support local social and economic development in Ireland. In 1995 Pobal and Combat Poverty were awarded responsibility for the implementation of a substantial part of the EU Special Support Programme for Peace and Reconciliation in the Border Region of Ireland (1995-1999). This Programme was established to provide practical assistance to the region after the autumn ceasefires of 1994. To implement the Programme efficiently and effectively, a joint implementing body, Border Action (formerly ADM/CPA), was established in 1996.

Border Action’s main base is in Monaghan. This is complemented with outreach offices in Letterkenny, Dundalk and Sligo. Border Action's Programme Team has been supporting projects ranging from employment and business development through community led development and social inclusion to cross-border reconciliation.

Border Action publishes a range of reports on its peace and reconciliation work and on economic and social development in the Border counties. For information on Border Action publications visit www.borderaction.ie/publications.
